Questions we get asked

If your question isn’t here, ask it. We answer questions before you’re a client.

What does a bookkeeper actually do for a small business?
A bookkeeper records and reconciles every transaction your business makes, so your accounts always reflect reality. At BizzyBooks that covers capturing your bank accounts, issuing debtors and creditors statements, running payroll, and preparing and filing your VAT, PAYE and UIF returns. The result is a clean set of records that your accountant and SARS can both work from.
How much does bookkeeping cost in South Africa?
BizzyBooks charges from R1 200 a month for monthly accounts for a small business, and from R2 600 a month for a medium-sized business. Books that have fallen into arrears, and ad hoc updates, are charged at R250 an hour. Monthly figures are starting prices; what you pay depends on your transaction volume. You get a written scope and your fee before any work starts.
Do you charge by the hour?
Only for arrears and ad hoc updates, which are charged at R250 an hour because nobody can know up front how far behind a set of books has fallen. Ongoing monthly work is a fixed monthly fee agreed in writing before it begins, so there are no hourly surprises at the end of the month.
Do I have to sign a long contract?
No. The arrangement is month to month. Give a month’s notice and your records come with you.
What happens in the free consultation?
The first step is a free 30-minute conversation about how your business runs, what your books look like today and where the gaps are. After that you receive a written scope and one monthly fee. Only once you approve it does work begin.
My books are months behind. Can you still help?
Yes. Catch-up work on books in arrears is one of the services BizzyBooks offers, alongside ad hoc updates and tax compliance, and it is charged at R250 an hour. Bring the records you have and the first consultation will cover what it takes to get current.
Do you handle VAT, PAYE and UIF submissions?
Yes. VAT, PAYE and UIF returns are worked out and filed on time as part of the monthly service, so nothing is left to the last minute.
Can you register a new company for me?
Yes. BizzyBooks handles company registrations and ongoing CIPC compliance, including annual returns and keeping company records up to date.
Do you work with businesses outside Gauteng?
Yes. BizzyBooks is based in Wilropark, Roodepoort and works with businesses across Gauteng in person and with clients elsewhere in South Africa remotely.
Who will I actually be dealing with?
Charmaine, every month. BizzyBooks keeps a small client list on purpose so every set of books gets proper attention, and you deal with the same person who does the work rather than an account manager.
Is a bookkeeper the same as an accountant?
They are different, complementary roles. A bookkeeper keeps the day-to-day records accurate and the monthly submissions on time; an accountant works from those records to prepare annual financial statements and give tax advice. BizzyBooks keeps your records in a state your accountant can pick up directly, which usually reduces what you pay them at year end.
